Post Holiday Detox! 5 Easy Ways to Cleanse After Unhealthy Eating

holiday_decisions_weight_lossWe have all done it before…yes, you know what I am talking about…go “all-out” in the holiday season—eating cookies, cheese, casseroles and champagne. The days scratch into weeks, and as we spend the festive season celebrating, our bodies are on sugar and fat overload.

Before this becomes a lifestyle, give your body this simple Post Holiday Detox to cleanse your body back to normal and start the New Year right. No starvation or weird juice required, I promise!

1) Drink More Water

With all the wine, hot toddies and spiked egg nog, getting rehydrated is key. Focus on drinking 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water daily. For example: if you weight 150lbs, you would drink at least 75 ounces (nine 8ounce bottles/day). Add a slice of lemon..your skin will thank you for it!

2) Do a Lymphatic Flush

Your lymphatic system is responsible for clearing out toxins and debris out of every cell. When the lymph system is congested it is unable to function properly and symptoms like itchy skin, joint pain, edema, fatigue and reoccurring illness can occur.

Lymphatic Flush Recipe using Young Living Essential Oils: Add 2 drops of grapefruit, 3 drops of cypress, and 4 drops of orange into 1/2 gallon of distilled water. Drink 1-3 glasses each day. Young Living Essential Oils are available at the studio.

3) Fiber Up

To help get your digestive system back on track, add 25g of fiber into your diet daily. Soluble fiber regulates blood sugar metabolism and helps you fill up so you are less tempted to do so with sugary foods. As well, soluble fiber helps to establish a better environment of good vs bad bacteria and yeast in your digestive system. Insoluble fiber is not absorbed by the body, but plays an important roll in scrubbing the intestinal walls clean and adds bulk to help keep the elimination process moving forward.

4) Say No to Sugar

Overconsumption of sugar affects your brain and sets you up for a sugar addiction…basically wanting more and more sugar to satisfy the brain receptors. Saying “NO” to processed sugars begins the much needed reset process.

5) Give Your Muscles Some Love

Feeling a little stiff and lacking energy? Increase your circulation and detox efforts by adding in just five minutes of pilates or yoga to your morning routine. The twisting of the muscles during the various positions releases fresh blood as well as nutrients and oxygen to the muscles—all of which will help you recover faster. Got some extra time? Get in some cardio to really sweat it out. The more your muscles demand energy to do their work, the faster your body will cleanse itself.
